It would be unfair to scrap the season – Ajax coach

Calvin Marlin said he would be shattered if the Premier Soccer League were to decide to scrap the season and start it afresh as it happened in the Netherlands.

Marlin’s cellphone would probably be dealing with an influx of congratulatory calls and messages as he would have mastered the return of Ajax Cape Town to the Absa Premiership, but the unfortunate outbreak of Covid-19 has postponed or possibly put an end to such.

When the Premiership and GladAfrica Championship games were stopped in early March, Ajax had a clean seven points lead and with their immediate chasers, Swallows, Uthongathi FC and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila seemingly going through a dip at the time, the Urban Warriors looked good to finish top.

Marlin, who took over as head coach when Andries Ulderink quit early this year, said he would be shattered if the Premier Soccer League were to decide to scrap the season and start it afresh as it happened in the Netherlands.

“I can tell you I don’t want a scenario like in the Eredivisie. It will be tough to just scrap all the work and effort that the players and staff put into those results,” Marlin told the club’s website.

“It wouldn’t be logical to throw a whole season away because Ajax Cape Town needs to be in the top division. My hope is that they possibly push the (Absa) Premiership up to 18 teams for next season and come up with a solution for the least amount of games or no games to be played. Path of least resistance should be applied. No teams need to get relegated if you push the league to 18 teams,” he added.

The PSL is yet to make a formal decision on the way forward but there are suggestions that it may use the format of camps used in their Multichoice Diski Challenge.
