Jomo Cosmos could be attached due to Jomo Sono’s ‘R40m’ tax debt – report
According to court papers last month, Sono was given seven working days to come up with the money.

South African football fans were shocked by news on Sunday broken in tabloid Sunday World that football personality and owner of Jomo Cosmos Jomo Sono has an astronomical tax bill of R40 million.

According to court papers the weekly had access to, Sono came to an agreement last year to pay about R40 million in taxes owed related to alleged unpaid VAT, Pay As You Earn tax, a skills development levy and penalties.
However, last month the SA Revenue Service (Sars) reportedly obtained judgment at the High Court in Johannesburg to attach his assets and the assets of his football club, Jomo Cosmos, which plays in the National First Division.
Sars would not comment on the private tax matters of an individual, though Sono himself confirmed to the paper that he owed the money.
He, however, expressed shock that Sars had opted for the judgment against him because they’d come to an agreement in December on how he would pay. He surmised that his auditors may have “failed to submit certain returns they wanted”.
So two Shangaans – both ex-Orlando East residents, both ex-Orlando Pirates players and both soccer coaches – are on the front pages of tabloids today.
