Safa to punish Wits and SuperSport for blocking national team call-ups

South African Football Association CEO Dennis Mumble says they plan on taking action against Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United for not releasing their players to represent the country.

Wits did not release Phakamani Mahlambi to join the Amajita squad in South Korea for the U20 FIFA World Cup, as he was said to be nursing a hamstring injury. The Clever Boys allowed Reeve Frosler to join Thabo Senong’s squad after they secured their maiden league title.

Matsatsantsa are in hot water for not allowing Teboho Mokoena to travel with the South Africa Under-20 squad.

Amajita lost their opening match against Japan over the weekend because they were missing their key men.

“We are now beyond this thing of going down on our knees whenever we need players [for the national teams],” Mumble tells the IOL website.

“We are going to punish them. And they must understand why because we cannot have a situation where clubs put their interests ahead of the national teams.

“All teams have been cooperative except for these two. We are going to have another DC where a final decision is going to be made.

“And the message is that we are no longer going to take matters such as these lying down. We can either fine, terminate or suspend any of these two teams.”
