Soweto derby: Four key players for Kaizer Chiefs

While Khune's recent form might be a concern, his class is undebatable.

The imminent clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates is no exception, with the potential for a player’s brilliance to sway the game.

These high-stakes encounters demand individuals with what former Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba aptly referred to as “big match temperament.”

Today, we focus on Kaizer Chiefs, a team boasting a mix of experienced players and potential Soweto derby debutantes.

We pick four Chiefs players we believe have what it takes to become heroes in this big match.

Veteran, Khune will be for Chiefs

  • Itumeleng Khune:

If given the nod, Khune will mark his 28th Soweto derby appearance, bringing a wealth of experience to the pitch.

His veteran presence could play a pivotal role in calming the nerves of newer players, a sentiment he emphasised in the lead-up to the game.

While Khune’s recent form might be a concern, his class is undebatable. The Soweto derby might just be the stage for him to rediscover his best form.

  • Thatayaone Dithlokwe:

Despite this being Dithlokwe’s inaugural Soweto derby, his consistent presence in the Chiefs’ starting lineup this season, particularly in the central defence, suggests reliability.

Dithlokwe’s composed demeanour could prove crucial in thwarting the rapid attacks of Pirates and maintaining defensive stability.

Dolly’s influence needed for Chiefs in Soweto derby

  • Keagan Dolly:

Set to partake in his fifth Soweto derby since joining Amakhosi, Dolly brings a wealth of experience and inspiration to the team.

Beyond his on-field prowess, Dolly’s role as an influential figure ensures that teammates feel at ease, a valuable trait in a high-pressure game where nerves may come into play.

  • Yusuf Maart:

Maart’s history in the Soweto derby includes a remarkable debut where he scored a sensational Puskas Award contender against his former youth club.

With a knack for unsettling defensive units, Maart’s ability to capitalise on scoring opportunities adds an element of unpredictability to Chiefs’ attacking strategy.
