Maboe was a regular feature in Sundowns’ starting line-up last season but his pre-season injury means he will have to wait a lot longer before making an appearance this season.

That too, is subject to how long his rehabilitation process could take. At this point, Tabane and his team project a lengthy lay off.

“He is currently four weeks post knee surgery. He injured his lateral meniscus and his anterior cruciate ligament. A Meniscus is a piece of cartilage that is found in the knee, it is more of a shock absorber between the thigh bone and the shin bone. That got torn completely. It was quite complex and it needed surgery and it was successful.

“We are now looking at the rehab process of about six to nine months but it is not the first time that we are treating such injuries. With the medical team that we have here, we are quite confident that he might come back a little earlier than that,” said Tabane.

The doctor went on to reveal that the 27-year-old is in good spirits and has always been positive about his rehabilitation process. Tabane told Maboe to draw some inspiration from players like Sibusiso Vilakazi and Andile Jali, who have been able to speed-up their recovery process and returned back to action a lot quicker than expected.

“These are the types of injuries which could be a career-ending injury, but he is a highly motivated individual and we actually started the rehab before the surgery and he was quite keen to do that. He knew exactly what was going on, we have had players who had similar injuries and we ask them to talk to each other so that they can see that so and so had an injury and they are playing again.”
