Maritzburg release former Pirates and Sundowns midfielder

Maritzburg United confirmed they have parted ways with former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Thamsanqa Sangweni.

Sangweni joined the Team of Choice at the beginning of the season, but failed to break into the club starting lineup.

“Maritzburg United Football Club and midfielder Thamsanqa Sangweni have mutually agreed to part ways with immediate effect,” read a statement from the club.

“The former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns star had been looking to resurrect his career, and Maritzburg felt he deserved the opportunity to prove himself.

“However, that was with the understanding that Sangweni would be able to force himself into the reckoning to play regularly, which unfortunately did not happen as he made just two substitute appearances in the league.

“As such, MUFC believe that it is in everyone’s best interests to allow the player to look for a new club.”

Maritzburg chairperson Farook Kadodia explained the club’s decision to release Sangweni.

“Thamsanqa Sangweni did not make the number of appearances as the club had requested as per his contract,” said Kadodia.

“We felt that it was not good to hold on to him for too long and waste the chance for him to potentially find a new club in the January window period.

“Hence we have come to a parting of ways so that he can find a new club as early as possible.”
