Tembo blasts Mbule for poor performance

SuperSport United coach Kaitano Tembo could not hide how unhappy he was with Sipho Mbule’s lukewarm display when Matsatsantsa A Pitori were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Maritzburg United in an Absa Premiership match on Wednesday night.

Mbule was substituted off for the third game running and this is because Tembo feels the 21-year-old is not effective enough.

“Sipho is an attacking player and he is really skilful and sometimes he is very good on the eye but he does not win us games, that is the challenge and our youngsters need to be taught that it is not just for entertainment, it is about winning games and it is also important to try and work on him on that because he has got so much potential,” said Tembo.

Mbule began the season on fire with a couple of Man-of-the-Match displays but his performance, according to the Matsatsantsa mentor, has taken huge a dip. However, Tembo is committed to helping the youngster return to the form that has seen him being tipped as a strong contender for Young Player of the Season.

“When the season started he was creating and scoring goals and he took his foot off the pedal in that area and we need him to focus on that. It is not about him just being on the pitch, he has to be effective and those are the qualities we need to teach our youngsters. If you want to play in Europe, that is what they look at. If you want to renew your contract they check how many goals you have scored and how many assists you have,” said Tembo, who added that scoring and creating goals should become the culture for attacking players in the country.

“It is very important for our young players to understand that you have got to be able to play effective football. When I talk about effective football we are talking about him creating goals and him scoring goals. If you go on YouTube and click Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, what do you find? You find goals and assists.”
