It’s a big weekend in football and rugby, here and abroad, so here are our three top pics and predictions this weekend.
Football
Chelsea v Manchester United
In the red corner … Manchester United, a side dedicated to winning the Uefa Europa League but not so dedicated, it seems, to bothering to worry about the rest of the English Premier League season. Ruben Amorim’s side’s only route to the Champions League is to beat Tottenham in Bilbao on May 21.
In the blue corner … Chelsea are trying to finish in the top five in the Premier League to get their own place in next season’s Champions League. They will do it if they can win their last two league games, against United and at Nottingham Forest.
Enzo Maresca’s side should have too much for a disinterested United at Stamford Bridge on Friday. But it is also perfectly possible the Blues will find a way to lose.
Prediction: Chelsea 2 Man Utd 1
Sekhukhune United v Kaizer Chiefs
Kaizer Chiefs won the Nedbank Cup last weekend to finally lift a trophy after a decade of misery. It says much about their season, however, that it still seems far from certain head coach Nasreddine Nabi will still be in a job after the end of the campaign.
One way Nabi can increase that possibility is surely by getting Chiefs into next season’s MTN8. Winning their last two league games would seal that place.
But Sekhukhune are third and will want to hold off Stellenbosch and qualify for next season’s CAF Confederation Cup. Eric Tinkler is a wily coach and a home win or a draw is the safer bet here.
Prediction: Sekhukhune 1 Kaizer Chiefs 1
Rugby
Sharks v Scarlets
It’s the final round of pool action in the URC and the fourth-placed Sharks (58 points) need a win against sixth-placed Scarlets (48) to have a chance of moving into third. That will happen with a win and if Glasgow (third, 59) lose away to Leinster.
Scarlets though can move up to fifth if things go their way and the Stormers come unstuck against Cardiff.
Prediction: Sharks to win by 15.
