Kirk Franklin to headline Durban Gospel festival

Gospel star Kirk Franklin has been announced as the headline act for Durban's International Gospel festival.

Franklin, who won a Grammy Award in 1996 will headline a show that is also set to feature a range of local stars, including Rebecca Malope, Benjamin Dube, Sifiso Ncwane, Ntokozo Mbambo, Dumi Mkokstad.

Commenting on Franklin’s role in the Blestival, organizer Zama Mkhize said: “Kirk Franklin has both the message and the energy for the stadium and those beautiful sing-along songs like My Life is in Your Hands which the South African public likes.”

The event is due to take place at Moses Mabhida Stadium on 7 December but fans from Gauteng will also have the opportunity to see the award-winning singer perform when he takes to the stage at Rhema Bible Church in Johannesburg on December 6.

Speaking about the Festival organizer Zanele Mbokazi Nkambule said: “We choose to call it a Blestival because we know everyone who will be at Moses Mabhida will be blessed.

“This is one event not to be missed by any Christian or gospel music lover.”

Despite his pious image Franklin is no stranger to controversy. He was embroiled in a bitter legal wrangle with former band mates and he also admitted to a pornography addiction when he appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
