I couldn’t trust him anymore, says Bonang on Somizi

It turns out the former BFFs' breakup has nothing to do with AKA and DJ Zinhle – it goes a little further back.

Bonang Matheba has finally revealed why she stopped being friends with Somizi Mhlongo, more than a year after ending the friendship.

Following the friends’ breakup, Somizi said in his reality TV show he thought Bonang cut him out of his life following reports he was the one who told DJ Zinhle Bonang was dating AKA behind her back, but it turns out that was not the case.

In her new book, Bonang From A to B, writes the breakup was a result of Somizi’s behaviour following Bonang’s bad breakup from ex-boyfriend Euphonik.

“It took me a while to eventually leave that relationship, and years after I had, Somizi, who was my friend, suddenly became friends with my ex. The same one whose violence towards me he had witnessed. That’s when I knew he had to go. I couldn’t trust him anymore, so I cut him out of my life,” she wrote.

Matheba accused Euphonik of physically assaulting her in 2012, allegations the DJ denies to this day.

In 2015, Marie Claire’s campaign against women abuse had DJ Euphonik take part in it wearing stilettos like the other men involved in the campaign, a decision that was immediately met with public criticism. Bonang also took to Twitter to slam the decision, tagging Somizi while at it, perhaps to ask him to stand by her against her alleged abuser.

“Let’s wait for the tagged friend to respond,” Euphonik wrote at the time.

However, Somizi did not say anything.

Though some on social media have supported Bonang on her decision, some said she should have told Somizi about it, instead of cutting him off silently, only to address it in her book.
