Tyla bags another Grammy for Best African Music Performance

This marks Tyla’s second Grammy win in the same category.

South African singer Tyla has won another Grammy Award at the 68th edition of the global music awards.

The ceremony was held on Sunday, 1 February, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, United States.

The Water hitmaker, whose full name is Tyla Laura Seethal, won the award for Best African Music Performance for her single Push 2 Start.

She competed in the category alongside Davido and Omah Lay’s Lay With You, Eddy Kenzo and Mehran Matin’s Hope & Love, and Ayra Starr and Wizkid’s Gimme Dat.

This marks Tyla’s second Grammy win in the same category. She first received the award in 2024 for Water, which was her debut Grammy victory.

International recognition and national pride

Following her first Grammy win, Tyla collected several international accolades. These included two Billboard Music Awards for Top Afrobeats Artist and Top Afrobeats Song for Water. The 24-year-old also won iHeartRadio World Artist of the Year and received her second consecutive MTV Video Music Award in September last year.

Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Peace Mabe, previously praised Tyla’s achievements, describing her as a symbol of South African creativity.

“From township beginnings to international arenas, Tyla has carried our music and identity to the highest stages. She embodies resilience, creativity and pride,” Mabe said.

“Her journey proves that South African artists are not only competitive, but also capable of setting global trends,” she added.

Mabe said Tyla’s success extends beyond individual recognition.

“Tyla’s triumph is not just hers. It belongs to the millions of young South Africans who see in her story a reflection of their own potential,” she said.

“It belongs to every artist who works tirelessly, often without recognition, to carry our culture forward. And it belongs to a country that continues to prove that its creative spirit is indomitable.”
