R40m PowerBall Plus winner: Keep calm and carry on working?

A Cape Town man won this year's second-highest PowerBall Plus jackpot. Take a look at his plans for the future...

Waking up an instant millionaire would drastically impact most people’s lives. Some might even buy a small island or a yacht to soak up the warm rays of financial freedom. The latest Powerball Plus jackpot winner, however, is not entertaining these luxurious thoughts.

The Cape Town man will continue with his job in the finance sector. This, despite the fact that many of those who buy lottery tickets probably do so with the hope of cashing out of the corporate rat race.

R40m PowerBall Plus winner

National Lottery Ithuba said the man struck it lucky with the PowerBall Plus draw on Friday 12 May.

According to Ithuba, the R40 218 921.61 was the second-highest PowerBall Plus jackpot this year.

On 17 March, an unemployed mother-of-two from Johannesburg won R75 million, the biggest PowerBall jackpot this year.

Not planning ‘anything drastic’

“One of the first things I did was to wake my wife and tell her the big news,” the jackpot winner told Ithuba officials.

With the R40 million in his bank account, the man said he was not planning to do “anything drastic” yet.

The “working winner” said he will pay off his home loan, invest his winnings and was looking forward to travelling overseas with his family.

SA’s biggest lottery winner to date

Another man from Cape Town holds the record for the biggest PowerBall win, which is also the biggest overall lottery win in South Africa.

At the time of winning the massive jackpot, the man also claimed that he would continue working, despite his newfound fortune and being in his fifties.

According to Lottoland, the top prize of R232 131 750 came about after the jackpot rolled over 24 consecutive times. The top prize increased by R20 million from the previous draw.

The lucky ticket was purchased at an OK Mini Mart in Tygerdal. It took a week for the biggest PowerBall winner to come forward and when he did, he remained anonymous.

Upcoming jackpots: Could you be the next lucky winner?

An estimated R39 million is up for grabs in the PowerBall draw on Tuesday 16 May, with the Daily Lotto jackpot standing at R500 000. Go on, spoil yourself with a small island…
