Our resolve in the fight against crime has always been and will continue to be relentless. We have seen unprecedented challenges over the past three years, as has many businesses in the sector. These challenges also influence safety and security for every individual living in the Lowveld. With a sharp rise in unemployment, our towns have been flooded with the homeless community. Unfortunately, this has led to a massive rise in common theft as these individuals become desperate in their attempt to survive. With statutory bodies offering very little control or relief to this problem, we can expect a further escalation in common theft. Over the past 12 months, there has also been an explosion of violent crime, with criminals utilising lightning speed and ambush tactics to sustain themselves. The level of violence has increased to the extent that if not curbed, will further impact the business sector. Even though all this seems bleak and depressing, there is a way forward, but this will depend on the unification and cooperation of the business sector and individuals alike. Our goal is to have our communities support us with not only their business, but taking to heart the advice given by our security experts. Only once communities buy in to change the way they approach the fight against crime can we truly start being victorious against criminals. As South Africans and as residents of the Lowveld, we must evolve to survive our current situation and situations to come.
