Curro matrics sent off on a steampunk evening
A chill wind blew across the expanse of trees and beautiful lawns at Whispering Thorns as the Curro Nelspruit grade 12 pupils of 2017 celebrated their matric dance last Friday.
The guests of honour arrived in style, each one stunningly lovely in their ball gowns and formal attire. They alighted from vehicles that growled, spun and enthralled, muscle cars, vintage cars and desert terrain cars, heralding them in while spitting up dust, each one impressive in its own way for their speed, sleek lines or sheer horsepower.
As the couples got out, the applause raised the roof. Waiting to greet the beautifully dressed young women on the arms of their handsome partners were an entourage of steampunk-attired staff. The dining hall was a sight to behold indeed. Resplendent in steampunk décor, not an item was out of place, not a thought had been missed. If these young people wanted fairy tale magic, they surely got it here on this magical evening.
Taking six months to painstakingly prepare each detail, it certainly seems it was worth the effort and time it took to make it perfect. This would surely be a night to remember. The air started to chill as the sun started to sink, and the mood turned to one of anticipation, a frisson of excitement running through the bubbling joyous group as they sipped on their mugs of warming soup.
This delightful ambiance created on this evening by the hard work of parents and teachers was tinged with a hint of nostalgia, tempered by the knowledge of the adventure that lies ahead of these young people as they spread their wings to fly.
