NELSPRUIT – The Shalamuka Science Centre hosted the Penreach Science Careers Day on August 24. Presentations by Manganese Metal Company (MMC) and Sappi allowed learners to discover the career possibilities imminent in their field. Andrew Rudge of Mxit Reach, a recently launched broad-based education and community upliftment tool, accessible via cellphone, demonstrated to pupils how to access information like the periodic table via cellphone to assist them in their science and maths subjects.
Several exhibitors were on hand at the expo centre to chat to the youngsters about the career possibilities if they chose to select these subjects as a study direction.
This ranged from forestry and winder control in the mines to the property industry and medical technology.
“This is very interesting, a lot of this I didn’t know,” said Lubisi Sanele, who also showed great interest in the mechanical equipment on display by Siemag Tecberg Winder Control. The company’s representative, Raymond Lyris, said that although many of the pupils showed an interest and asked many questions, he believed that a strong focus on English language development, in addition to science and maths, would greatly benefit these children, who all hail all from rural communities around Nelspruit.
Tracey McBain of Penreach said that they were satisfied with the proceedings and that the aim was to educate grade nines in advance for their subject choices for
grade 10.
“We had speakers, now working at companies like MMC and Sappi, who had in fact been Penreach science and maths pupils.
The children could relate to them because they came from the same background and faced similar challenges.”
