Five local scholars participate in National Debate

Five local pupils have been invited to represent Mpumalanga in the final of the national road and safety debate in Port Elizabeth on September 25 and 26.

NELSPRUIT – The learners are Hazel Nkosi and Felicity Mhlongo of Mgubho Combined School (Ehlanzeni region), Zanele Ngwenya of Masizakhe Secondary School (Gert Sibande), Bongiwe Gambu of Khunjuliwe Secondary School (Gert Sibande) and Thabo Malekane of Mashishing High School (Bohlabela).

They have been invited in lieu of their participation in the provincial road and safety debate which was held in Lydenburg on August 31. The pupils who are targeted for the debate are those who debate on issues that concern pedestrian safety, road safety, traffic-law enforcement and the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Act. Mpmalanga firsts initiated the debate and it has since become a national event.

MEC for community dafety, security and liaison, Mr Vusi Shongwe was reported wishing them well and congratulated them on their accolade.

The provincial and national road safety debates were implemented in a response to statistics that showed that 40 per cent of fatalities on the road involve people between 0 and 25 said the department’s spokesman, Mr Joseph Mabuza. The debates are therefore dedicated to the younger motorists.
