Teachers get recognition

Teachers that promote conservation education in the classroom were recenlty rewarded for their efforts.

NELSPRUIT – The Volvo-GreenforBlue Awards is an annual environmental competition run by the AutoTec Foundation in conjunction with the Department of Education. Its purpose is to recognise and award the efforts of those teachers and curriculum implementers who create awareness about nature conservation in the classroom.

The competition is held in the Bushbuckridge, Ehlanzeni, Nkangala and Gert Sibande regions. The final judging was held in Nelspruit at AutoTec Volvo by a panel of six independent judges of Wessa, the Department of Education, MPowerFM, Rotary and an independent environmental consultant.

The main prize-giving event took place at Sanbi on September 14 where the best environmental teacher,

Ms RJ Mabuza and Ms K Nyathikazi, who is the only curriculum implementer, walked away with a laptop, printer and trophy each.

The winning educator also won a plasma television sponsored by Makro, a laminating machine and a borehole pump for her school, Londhindha Primary. All 12 finalists received certificates and goodie bags from SPAR, which contained a Vodacom web box and educational material from Sappi and Old Mutual.

“A number of very impressive portfolios were submitted by educators, yet the curriculum implementers still seem to lack motivation to enter the competition which is a serious disappointment,” said

Jeannine Ferreira, COO of the Autotec Foundation.
