Modikwa wishes matric learners luck in their exams

The learners should utilize this opportunity as a way to acquire decent jobs at the mine

ONVERWACHT- Modikwa platinum mine once again proved their commitment to education when it hosted a motivational session for the maths and science grade 12 learners from local communities.

Matric learners gathered at the mine hall last Friday October 11 in order to learn more about the mine’s new plans and developments. The programme is earmarked at improving the pass rate in these subjects.

Learners listened keenly as Modikwa’s socio-economic, development and transformation leader, Mmasaku Mohale, outlined the reasons behind the programme.

“With this initiative we intend to contribute towards the development of human capital in the area, and also groom local candidates for mining careers. The mine will award bursaries to the top four learners from this programme who intends to study courses in mining. The learners should utilise this opportunity as a way to acquire decent jobs at the mine. A pass in maths and science opens many doors” said Mohale.

Priska Makola, a graduate metallurgist of the mine, shared her success with the learners. “Focus and foundation are key to success, avoid mixing with wrong and negative people. I was a teenager once just like you, I misbehaved but I always picked myself up and remedied my mistakes,” she said. Makola holds an honours degree in metallurgy.

Curriculum advisor of life sciences for the Magakala and Bohlabela circuits, Dennis Mogawane, thanked the mine for helping in encouraging the learners.

“I have faith the programme will have a major impact on the results of the learners, we are targeting a pass rate of more than 84% and with sponsors like Modikwa we can achieve that.”

The mine wished all the learners writing exams the best of luck; they also thanked educators who assisted by conducting Saturday classes during the year. The classes were attended at Nakgwadi and Phutinare high schools. The teachers who ensured the success of the classes were Mr Matsimela, Mr Mohlala, Mr Hungwe and Mr Mpheti.
