Pupils enjoy week at St Lucia

"This is a week none of us will ever forget. New friendships were created, old ones strengthened, but most importantly, it reminded us of the beautiful world we live in and how important it is to look after our planet,"

From September 30 to October 4 a group of about 80 grade ten learners headed to St Lucia for a week of fun. Expecting a week of lying in the sun at the beach the learners packed their bags, greeted their parents and boarded the buses at 06:00 on the rainy Monday morning. But upon arrival they quickly realised that the week was not only about fun and games and luckily various teachers joined this group to make sure they behave.

Upon arriving at Futululu they immediately changed into their swimwear and went straight to the beach. After a fun-filled first day the group enjoyed a dance performance by traditional Zulu dancers. Some even had an opportunity to show off their own moves.

They also explored the wonderful marine life of Mission Rocks and visited Cape Vidal for an afternoon on the beach.

“Telling jokes and stories around the bonfire and going for a night walk was definitely something to remember”, they said. Next on their list was a visit to the Crocodile Centre where they had the opportunity to meet the Nile crocodile, dwarf crocodile, narrow-snouted crocodile and the American alligator.

Luckily, for those who preferred a safer activity, a boat cruise gave them the opportunity to view pods of giant hippos and lazy sun-baked crocodiles from a distance. “The birds of the area weren’t shy either and we learnt quite a few things”.

As a last activity they headed to the Butterfly Dome for a 7km walk in the nature reserve. “This is a week none of us will ever forget. New friendships were created, old ones strengthened, but most importantly, it reminded us of the beautiful world we live in and how important it is to look after our planet,” the children agreed.
