K9 strikes again

Five suspects were recently arrested after vigilant police work by the K9 unit of the SAPS.

LYDENBURG – Five suspects were recently arrested after vigilant police work by the K9 unit of the SAPS.

The suspects, aged 24 to 40, were travelling in a suspicious vehicle which members of the unit pursued. According to WO Elias Mokwana there is currently a huge problem with regard to house robberies in town. “The K9 unit is therefore on high alert and the suspects were subsequently monitored. We arrested them in Viljoen Street near Postnet. Three unlicensed firearms were also confiscated as well as a VW Crafter.”

Mokwana said they found gloves and empty bags in the vehicle which would probably have been used in the crimes. “The suspects are from Johannesburg. We suspect they came to Lydenburg for the sole purpose of committing a robbery, probably at a big business.”

He said the three firearms, a revolver, a CZ75 pistol and a 9mm pistol were all filed to remove the trace numbers. Both pistols’ grips were covered in insulation tape. “This is to prevent fingerprint lifts. We are currently facing a problem with regard to criminals from outside entering the town. We are, however, up to the task at hand,” Mokwana said.

He called on the community to let them know of any suspicious persons or activities in and around town. “We are at the end of the day here to serve the community and therefore ask them to assist us in keeping the town safe.”
