Illegal hunting in the Komatipoort community

KOMATIPOORT – This past week a disgruntled resident informed Corridor Gazette of illegal activities in the community. According to the resident who wished to remain anonymous, farm managers in the area were selling wild meat to the public without licences or permits. “They are even sharing photos of the dead animals and themselves on social media.”
Farm manager Mr JJ Holtzhausen informed the publication that farm owners had hunting permits for which they had to apply each month. “The permits cover various animals but only a certain number may be hunted which means we cannot shoot as many as we please.
“This is to help farmers protect their crops from certain animals such as monkeys and baboons,” explained Holtzhausen. He added that some hunted on their property with permits, and then sold or gave the meat to their workers. “It is not an everyday trade, but only on occasion,” he said.
Spokesman for environment Mr Albi Modise, was contacted regarding this matter but no response was received before going to press.
