NELSPRUIT – Maj Gen Simon Mapyane will stand trial on charges of fraud in August.
Mapyane, Mpumalanga’s head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly called the Hawks, reappeared briefly in the local Regional Court on Thursday.
The Hawks generally target organised and economic crimes. Mapyane faces two charges of fraud related to the alleged falsification of travel claims to the value of R18 753,63.
He was first apprehended in May 2013 for supposedly submitting a false travel claim and a second similar charge was later added. Both related to claims submitted in 2010.
On Thursday court proceedings were delayed until shortly before 11:00. The prosecutor said the state would need at least two days for the trial, as it planned to call more than 10 witnesses.
The magistrate, Mr Roelf Smit set the dates for the trial as August 13 and 14. Mapyane, who was released on bail of R1 000 after his arrest, was dressed in a grey suit and looked relaxed. He left the court accompanied by policemen.
