Residents want councillor to step down

The community of Mabocha Village is demanding that Cllr Bifi Sekgobela resign from her duties as the councillor responsible for oversight of their area.

BURGERSFORT – The community of Mabocha Village is demanding that Cllr Bifi Sekgobela resign from her duties as the councillor responsible for oversight of their area.

Jeffrey Makofane, a citizen of the village, publicly accused her of not being able to step up to the plate. He says she has a bad attitude, “She screams and swears at our people and insults the men in my village, saying that they are not men.”

He also accuses her of filing a monthly report regarding the issues in their village without consulting residents or the local tribal authority. Apparently a contractor was employed by the municipality to supply the residents of this area with water before the end of last year. “It now seems the contractor is not going to continue with the work and is starting to remove its machinery without the job being completed. We still have to fetch water from the river,” he claims.

“Every time the community asks her to come to a meeting she never pitches. She never helped build us a cemetery. We are not satisfied with what she does,” he adds.

About 50 residents of this area staged a protest on Sunday morning and marched to the Greater Tubatse Municipality demanding that Sekgobela be removed from her position.

Mr Mokoena Thabiso, communications manager, replied, “We would like to state that the municipality has not received any application from Mabocha residents to march and those allegations against the councillor have not been brought to the attention of the Office of the Speaker. We would appreciate it if those allegations could be submitted to the relevant office for investigation.”

The community of Mabocha demands action within seven days, as of Tuesday.
