Policeman alleged to have confessed to crimes

Hlathi said Dlamini's official firearm was confiscated and sent for ballistic testing.

NELSPRUIT – A policeman and his accomplice have apparently confessed to a murder and dumping the body. Const Sandile Dlamini (28), and Mr Saico Mathe (30), appeared in the Ngodwana Period Court last Thursday.

The two men face charges of murder and the possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle. Dlamini is also facing an additional charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to provincial police spokesman Col Leonard Hlathi, their appearance comes after police followed up on information regarding a VW Golf that was being driven recklessly on the N4, towards Waterval Boven on Monday March 31.

He said a search for the vehicle was launched. It was spotted near Waterval Boven where the police pulled the driver off the road for further investigation.

Hlathi said the driver, Dlamini whom they found to be a police officer stationed in Balfour, was allegedly under the influence of alcohol. “They also noticed blood on the back seat and took both men in for questioning.”

The suspects confessed to allegedly shooting the car’s lawful owner and dumping his body next to the road at Elandshoek near Ngodwana before driving off in it.

Hlathi added that upon further investigation, police discovered the body at the mentioned location with a bullet wound to the head. “A case of murder was opened against the duo.”

He said Dlamini’s official firearm, which they suspected to have been used in killing the victim, was confiscated and sent for ballistic testing. Hlathi concluded that the suspects were remanded in custody and their cases was postponed to Thursday April 10 for bail application.
