Local police unit arrests Interpol suspect

He was wanted for, among others, the alleged conspiracy to commit mail, wire and bank fraud and for the apparent violation of Title 18 of the USA Code, Section 1349. He allegedly also conspired to commit identity fraud

MBOMBELA – Members of highway patrol arrested a suspect wanted by Interpol for various crimes he had allegedly committed in the United States of America, Canada and France.

The suspect, a Nigerian national, was arrested at a house in Stonehenge on Tuesday.

Capt Piet Smit, commander of the police’s local highway patrol, said he had been contacted by officials at his national office and informed that a suspect on Interpol’s list of wanted criminals was hiding in the province’s capital.

“I was told that the suspect’s cellphone signal had been picked up in Mbombela,” Smit explained. That evening at about 19:00, Smit, accompanied by Const Hannes Blom and officials of J&M Security and Fidelity, went to a house in Krombek Street, Stonehenge, where they apprehended the suspect.

He is Mr Eaofeeq Olamilekan Oyelade (30). “He was wanted for, among others, the alleged conspiracy to commit mail, wire and bank fraud and for the apparent violation of Title 18 of the USA Code, Section 1349. He allegedly also conspired to commit identity fraud,” Smit said.

Oyelade had apparently been operating as part of an international syndicate. He and his accomplices would allegedly create false profiles on websites and ask for money.

Oyelade was taken to Pretoria where he appeared in court on Wednesday before he was to be extradited to the United States.
