WHITE RIVER – A total of 105 aspiring candidates of 27 primary schools were eligible for this year’s scholarship awards that took place in Uplands College Hall in early March. Schools as far afield as Botswana, Swaziland and Mozambique, to mention but a few, also attended.
Current grade 7 pupils applying for a seat in high school were taken into consideration to write the scholarship assessment and there four awards. The scholarship is given to the pupil with the top average mark for both English and maths. The college award goes to the pupils with the next top average mark for the two subjects (Uplands normally awards only two pupils in this category and was this year able to offer four).
The sport award is given to pupils with outstanding sporting ability, who preferably not only play two or more school sports but also represent their province in at least one discipline or more. (Uplands normally only offers one sport award, however this year three learners were given a chance to compete).
The culture award goes to a talented pupil who plays at least one musical instrument at a high level and has passed certain music exams, and is also involved in drama and possibly eisteddfods.
The scholarship awards recognise pupils with talent, either academic, sport, culture or all-round. The winners normally receive a rebate in tuition for their five years at high school. It is often the prestige and acknowledgement that means the most to them and families. To some it means the ability to be able to attend a school like Uplands, often changing their lives.
Uplands College is proud to announce the winners of the annual scholarship awards, for pupils entering the college in grade 8 for 2015. They are:
• Sarah Wagner of Uplands Prep who received the Uplands College Open Academic Scholarship Award
• Mark Botha and Arthur Verissimo of Uplands Prep, Amber Freestone of Summerhill Prep in Hazyview and Shae-Lynn McHardy of Usutu Forest Primary in Swaziland, who all received college awards.
• Adriaan Engelbrecht of Uplands Prep received the college cultural award
• Katherine Prior from Uplands Prep, Ryan Hood of Penryn Prep and Buhle Mashabane of Riverview Prep all received college sport awards.
“We would like to congratulate these pupils on their fine accomplishments. They competed against the best and came out tops. All of them can be very proud of their efforts,” said marketing manager, Bev du Preez.
