Preschool brightens workers’ day

The preschoolers of Little Cubs Montessori thanked the men that collect their garbage by giving them food parcels.

Little Cubs Montessori in Valencia Park ensured a happy start to the day by handing out food parcels to the municipal workers collecting garbage in their area.

The pupils sat on the lawn outside the school and waited for the truck to come, singing songs and getting quizzed on the day’s lesson.

The school had put together several hampers containing basic groceries like coffee, tea and maize meal to thank the people who do an excellent job collecting garbage.

When the truck arrived at the end of the street a cheer went up and the children started waving at the truck driver. He waved back and hooted the horn, to the delight of the children. After collecting all the garbage bags on the street, they parked the truck and came over to the school. One of the workers entertained the children by dancing for them, before receiving his parcel. The workers were all surprised by this nice gesture and thanked the school for thinking of them and showing appreciation of their work.

Ms Aneesa Nomani, the school’s principal, says the aim of the project was to teach the children that it’s important to share, to look after the needy and not to waste food. “The children get the message and through them, so do their parents,” she explained.

For the past month the school had been emphasizing the fact that there are people less fortunate than them. “Many children don’t eat all of the food in their lunch boxes, which their mothers took time and effort to make,” Nomani said. “They don’t know what it’s like not to have food.”

By the time the workers had gone back to work and the excitement had died down, the children were hungry and very appreciative of the snacks they received.
