Reliable information that reached Barberton Times indicates that the area is gradually becoming a hub for cocaine trafficking.
Security operatives told the paper that, based on a tip-off, they discovered more than 30 empty sachets suspected to have contained cocaine at an illegal smoking zone.
The place, which has since been nicknamed Lovers’ Lane Corner; is situated in Kriel Extension Street. The security personnel, who didn’t want to say which agency they belonged to, claimed to have witnessed the drug traders briskly doing business at another street known to this publication.
They took the reporter to a house where the drug dealing allegedly took place, but none of athe dealers were seen.
At the Lovers’ Lane Corner several sachets, which the security operatives said they suspected to have contained cocaine, were found scattered all over the place, as well as empty bottles and used condoms. The sewerage system was filled with empty bottles of liquor.
“This indicates that these users are younger children. I believe the eradication of drug dealers would minimise the use of substances among the youth,” said one of the security personnel.
Nearby residents claim to have reported the matter to police and the municipality, but nothing has been done to flush the miscreants out of the area. The residents said the abuse of drugs has become an everyday thing.
“We live nearby. Once they come here they play loud music, drink alcohol and leave the area littered. They drag race around the area, making a noise,” said Paul du Plooy, a resident closer to Kriel Extension Street.
Const Tutu Nkosi, Barberton police spokesman said they would investigate the allegations.
