Whole town being turned into extended rubbish dump

LYDENBURG – For the past week no refuse removal has taken place in various extensions in town. The apparent reason for this is the expanded public works programme (EPWP) employees’ contract has apparently expired and was not renewed in time.
In the meantime while these workers are waiting for the contract renewal. rubbish and refuse are piling up littering the streets of the town.
The stench on some of the sidewalks has become unbearable and stray dogs are now tearing up the black bags leaving rotten garbage along the roads.
According to DA Cllr Nicko Jansen van Vuuren, this situation is unacceptable. Whatever the reason may be, it just shows again how poorly even the most basic services are rendered in TCM. “The apparent health hazards do not seem to bother the municipality. I have been told that the contracts have been sorted out and that services should return to normal soon. Whether this happens, is an open question.”

The municipality responded to the queries of the refuse removal saying, “Refuse removal is one of the municipal function and the municipality is making sure our officials collect refuse as per schedule. We acknowledge that we sometimes encounter minor challenge in terms of refuse removal and we can assure community members that the challenges have been solved and service is continuing as it should”.
