Cops arrest 24 over weekend crime blitz

A young man in possession of an illegal fire-arm and ammunition was among the 24 people who were arrested in and around Emjindini over the weekend during a two-day police crime blitz.

According to Const Tutu Nkosi, Barberton police spokesman, the law enforcing officials were targeting every form of crime, including petty offences.

The crime blitz, which was held on Friday and Saturday evenings, was conducted by the Barberton SAPS along with the Community Policing Forum members and SAPS reservists.

Nkosi said by adopting a zero-tolerance attitude it was hoped crime-prevention operations would impact on the major incidents which had of late been reported in Umjindi.

“A young man was arrested at Extension 11 for illegal possession of a firearm and four live rounds. At the time, officers were on a routine crime-prevention operation when they spotted the suspicious male. They stopped and searched him and recovered the pistol, for which he didn’t have papers,” said Tutu.

Of those arrested, 14 were for drinking in public, three for possession of dagga, one for driving under the influence of alcohol, one for gambling, one 1 for failing to comply with the liquor licence act and three for driving without valid motor drivers’ licences.

Most of those arrested appeared in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
