Schools test their spelling skills

In celebration of World Literacy Day, the White River Library hosted a spelling bee for schools in the area.

To encourage pupils to join the library and improve their reading skills, the White River Library hosted a spelling bee for schools in the area last week.

Pupils of Metropolitan Preparatory Academy and Victory Park Combined School entered teams and soon realised that a competition like this was much tougher than they thought. Library staff said it soon became apparent that the spelling ability of the pupils was not of a very high standard. They struggled despite being given a list of words to learn.

After five stressful rounds with tough words tripping them up, the finalists in the junior and senior divisions were chosen and after tiebreakers, the winners were announced. The staff would like to thank the “friend of the library”, Mary Green and the adjudicators, Cavil Brady and Gladys Gumede, for their contributions, as well the participating schools for their positive attitudes.

The pupils were encouraged to join the library and read more in order to improve their spelling skills.

The White River Library will continue to improve literacy in the community through events like the spelling bee and readathon.
