School’s library boasts almost 7 000 books

The pupils of Flamboyant school have a wide variety of books to choose from at their amazing library.

Flamboyant school’s library is any bookworm’s dream and with almost 7 000 books on their shelves, the pupils have no shortage of great up-to-date reading material.

This amazing school library is the pet project of Ms Heidi Cogill, a parent-turned-librarian. She started helping out at the library in 2006 and has since gotten more and more involved to the point of becoming the school’s librarian.

Cogill annually reviews the library’s stock to ensure it stays on topic for the pupils and is continually buying new and interesting books to get the children reading more. When some books are retired, they are donated to local schools who cannot afford new books.

To help the children who struggle with reading, the school employs paired reading, where a parent and child read together every day to help the child to learn through repetition.

The library boasts with a wide range of genres – from poems to jokes, recipe and craft books to Thomas.net storybooks and Nancy Drew graphic novels – in both Afrikaans and English. Cogill aims to keep the library colourful, interesting and modern to encourage the children to spend time there.

The biggest challenge is to get Afrikaans books that the pupils will be interested in, as Cogill says it is quite difficult to match the range of great books available in English.

There are also educational and children’s DVD’s that the children can watch in the library’s media room, which Cogill also regularly updates.
