Accused soldier’s trial date set

Messrs Boet Leonard Mashego and his co-accused, Michael Sithole, will face justice next year.

MBOMBELA – A South African National Defence Force soldier, Mr Boet Leonard Mashego and his co-accused’s rhino-poaching trial date was announced last Monday.

They will face justice on February 16, 2015.

On September 19, 2010, a rhino carcass was found in Stolsnek in the Kruger National Park. It’s horns had been removed. Shortly after, at 03:45, Mashego and Mr Micheal Sithole were found on either side of the park’s fence.

A shoot-out ensued between Mashego and police officials of Skukuza SAPD, during which Mashego was wounded. He was taken into custody while wearing his uniform.

Two rhino horns, two firearms and ammunition was found in their possession.

The trial has been in court since last year. It has now been confirmed that the accused will appear in the Nelspruit Regional Court again on February 16, 2015.
