LHS matriculants pass with acclaim

They are now also the proud bearers of the provincial award for best accounting marks in Mpumalanga.

MBOMBELA – Lowveld High School’s (LHS) matric class of 2014 did not obtain a 100 per cent pass rate, but managed to keep it above 90.

A total of 232 candidates registered to write the examination of which 218 passed and 13 did not make the cut. Their overall pass rate therefore is 94,4 per cent. In addition, they are now also the proud bearers of the provincial award for best accounting marks in Mpumalanga. Of the 218 achievers, 128 received entrance to study a bachelor’s degree thus being 59 per cent of the candidates, whereas 83 (38 per cent) obtained entrance to study for a diploma. Seven candidates (three per cent) achieved a higher certificate pass.

Sumaiyah Ismail and Ricylo Jamal both achieved six distinctions while Lerato Maropeng and Nothando Nonyane obtained five. Blessing Gininda and Yusuf Moola both got fours.

Ms Jane Wandrag, principal of LHS, said this was the first grade 12 group to write exams on the new CAPS syllabus.

“We are very satisfied with these results as a slight drop in the pass rate was expected. We are proud of the class of 2014 and wish the pupils all the best for the future.”

Nonetheless, he still achieved distinctions in Afrikaans (88 per cent), mathematics (82), life orientation (87), accounting (93), life science (89) and physical science (86). He obtained an average of 86 per cent. He wants to be a doctor and has already been accepted to study medicine at Wits.

Hot on his heels is the 2014 dux learner. It's also the English home language paper that kept her from reaching her goal of seven distinctions, missing it by 10 per cent. She still achieved an average of 85,6 per cent, with distinctions in Afrikaans (85), mathematics (84), life orientation (85), accounting (96), business studies (89) and physical science (90). She wants to be a chartered accountant and has been accepted to Wits to study BCom accounting.
