Defence arguments in rhino poaching case to be heard in February

The state's case against the two came to a close on January 14.

MBOMBELA – The defence’s arguments were scheduled to be heard on Friday in a poaching case, where the assistance of tracking dogs was utilised in catching the alleged poachers. The case was postponed to February 13.

Mr Jeremano Thive (22) and Mr Andelius Mukwebe (21) were arrested in connection with the alleged poaching of a white rhino in the Nwanetsi area of the Kruger National Park (KNP) on January 19, 2013.

Officials in an SAPS helicopter who were attending to another poaching scene, spotted the carcass of a white rhino and SANParks rangers went to investigate.  They tracked the suspects down, two kilometres from the carcass.

The state’s case against the two came to a close on January 14, after which the accused’s application for acquittal was denied. The defence’s arguments will commence in the Nelspruit Regional Court in two weeks.
