Limpopo teachers not paid

“The non-payment is not necessarily a delay, but is due to the capturing process and they will be paid by the end of the month.”

BURGERSFORT – Despite their sacrifices and hard work, Limpopo teachers who marked the grade 12 matric papers had not yet been remunerated, the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) said on Monday.

The money was supposed to have been paid before last year December 31, but they are still waiting for their stipends. Mr Ronald Moroatshehla, Sadtu’s provincial chairperson said the department was unreliable.

“It is so disappointing to experience this after the hard work and determination by the teachers in engaging in this process. They sacrificed their time with their families to mark the papers, is this the thank you they get?

“We therefore give the department up to the February 13 to pay the teachers,” Moroatshehla told Steelburger/Lydenburg News.

When asked what the union would do to remedy the situation. He said they were still discussing the matter in their boardrooms.

“We are still in meetings to discuss the issue, so we haven’t decided on the options, but we are considering a number of options, including taking the matter to court,” he said.

Provincial education department spokesman, Mr Paena Galane said the teachers would receive their money in due course.

“The non-payment is not necessarily a delay, but is due to the capturing process and they will be paid by the end of the month.”

In the past three years teachers received their money at the end of February instead of December.
