Business owners urged to be vigilant when locking up their premises

The police in Tonga are looking for two suspects who robbed a shop owner at gunpoint in Nkomazi.

TONGA – The police in Tonga are looking for two suspects who robbed a shop owner at gunpoint in Nkomazi.

Business robberies in the area are, according to a recent police statement, on the increase and the situation is taken seriously.

In the latest incident, a 22-year-old was in the process of locking up his shop when two armed men allegedly accosted him and ordered him to lie down. One of the men apparently searched him for his car keys before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash from the store.

The owner was locked in the store as the suspects drove away in his Colt bakkie which had been parked outside the shop.

Police are appealing to the community not to lock up their shops alone as it has lately become extremely dangerous and shop owners are specifically targeted when leaving their business premises.

Police are still investigating and no arrest has been made at the time of going to print. Anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects can contact Lt Mzwandile Nyambi on 079-891-5782.
