Lowveld High spoils Dasha with surprise

"It is actually such an amazing experience. I enjoyed it a lot to spend time with these kids. I was touched and inspired and once again realised just how blessed I am".

MBOMBELA – Pupils of the Dasha Foundation School Centre and Protective Workshop could hardly believe their eyes when learners of Lowveld High School (LHS) recently surprised them with an unexpected water-slide party and picnic.

Dasha is a school for disabled children that currently provides three facilities which includes a stimulation centre for seriously disabled children.

It is an educational school for kids who receive teaching according to their abilities as well as a protective workshop to which they and other adults go to receive skills training and produce saleable goods.

As part of LHS’ community project the school this year, in cooperation with the Leo Club, chose Dasha – a foundation which opened its doors for the very first time in 1995 with only three children and one teacher. Today Dasha, meaning God’s Gift, accommodates more that 40 children who suffer from various disabilities including cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome and autism.

LHS already proved how dedicated it was in making a difference in the lives of these learners. Lowveld High not only managed to raise valuable funds for the foundation, but also decided to spend time with the learners – one of the most valuable gifts one can give, Ms Lianna Holtzhausen of LHS’s community club said.

According to personnel at Dasha, people are sometimes “afraid” of these learners and avoid contact. For Charmain Thete, one of LHS’s pupils, this is heartbreaking. “It is actually such an amazing experience. I enjoyed it a lot to spend time with these kids. I was touched and inspired and once again realised just how blessed I am,” she said with tears in her eyes.
