Pupils take a stand against child abuse
The march started at Lydenburg Hoërskool with learners, their teachers and the Kohin team.
LYDENBURG – Hundreds of schoolchildren marched through town in a show against women and children abuse on Friday April 17. This is child abuse prevention month.
The march started at Lydenburg Hoërskool with learners, their teachers and the Kohin team.
The latter in collaboration with Lydenburg Hoërskool organised the demonstration. With their banners held high, the pupils confirmed their stance by chanting songs against children and women abuse.
The residents showed their support by waving, people stood outside their shops and some took pictures of the pupils as they marched.
According to Venessa de Necker, the Lydenburg area manager and Mpumalanga projects manager for Kohin, the aim was to raise awareness for the month of child abuse prevention.
“We need children to be aware of what is happening and know that they are not alone. “Some keep quiet, so we want the victims to know which procedures to follow so that they get assistance.
“Most victims of abuse think they are the only ones going through what they are facing, we need them to know that they are not alone, we want them to know it’s not ok to be abused,” De Necker said.
“Our vision is to empower the youth with hope and vision for the future and to provide answers for the unique challenges that the youth face daily,” said De Necker. “The youth is our focus, all our activities are about them and for them.”
“Every class in the school made their own banner. We made it a competition for the learners and the class that takes the first position will wear casual clothes for a day at school,” she explained.
“We want to say thank you to those who protect us and we want to say women, and child abuse is not acceptable,” she said.
“To those who abuse children it is not on,” said De Necker.
