Pupils learn more about the ins and outs of running a retail business

Summerhill Prep's grade seven pupils were eager to visit Shoprite in town for their economic and management science field trip after school on May 14.

Pupils were greeted by Shoprite manager, Hennie Cloete, and his assistant, Johan Nel, and were encouraged to ask them questions about running this store as a business. Questions regarding the shareholding, input capital and running costs were answered thoroughly.

Tiyani Sibuyi acted as the secretary for the class and took notes, while Caila Ann Christensen organised the thank-you letter, which Sibuyi presented to Nel after their tour. Their teachers remarked that pupils asked many relevant questions with regard to the running of a business and showed that they understood and had insight into the work that had been covered in class.

Learners were very enthusiastic and learnt more about Shoprite’s Ritebrand products, which are produced by the same producers as all the other products and are of the same quality, but are cheaper due to the packaging price differences, as well as the marketing of Shoprite, shareholding and the turnover and running costs.

The field trip was a good way for the pupils to experience the practical side of economic and management science and better understand how the business sector functions.

After pupils posed for photographs, they received cupcakes and then headed off to Sanbonani Resort Hotel. They had a delicious lunch on the veranda and had loads of fun playing table tennis, put-put and splashing in the pool.
