Protesters march against electricity cuts

As buses, taxis and other commuters made their way to town, those taking part in the protest shouted; “How does it feel going to work while we are demonstrating for our rights!”

LYDENBURG – Hundreds of residents in Mashishing and Skhila took to the streets on Wednesday to hand over a memorandum to Thaba Chweu Municipality (TCM).
Residents said that they are fed up that TCM is cutting off their household electricity accounts – of which most are in arrears.
Since early this morning angry residents burnt tyres and blockaded roads towards town. The SAPS deployed several officers who instructed that the blockages be removed to allow pedestrians and vehicles to pass through.
As buses, taxis and other commuters made their way to town, those taking part in the protest shouted; “How does it feel going to work while we are demonstrating for our rights!”
The march passed through town and various roads was blocked off. Protesters are still lined up outside TCM’s building.
