Huge rewards for Barberton High’s top chefs

While preparing the meals, load-shedding kicked in and there were some stressful moments for the chefs as time was running out.

The annual Mpumalanga Department of Education Young Chef competition presented its final elimination round from May 22 to 24. The event was held at the Malaga Hotel in Waterval Boven and three Barberton High School hospitality learners participated, accompanied by Issie Jackson and René Badenhorst.

The competition was presented by the Capital Hotel School and Protea Hotel Group (now called Fortis group). Pupils were divided into three groups. The participants were informed of the conditions of the competition beforehand. Included in their instructions was a secret ingredient and using this, they had to prepare a main course and a dessert in three hours.

While preparing the meals, load-shedding kicked in and there were some stressful moments for the chefs as time was running out. On Saturday evening, Michelle Pieterse was crowned overall winner and received a two-year scholarship from the Capital Hotel School in Pretoria. This prize includes chef’s equipment and uniforms, and is worth R130 000.

Jolien O’Kelly and Tanya Verster each received a prize for team spirit, which is a one-year scholarship at any Protea Hotel of their choice worth R75 000. These learners made Barberton High School very proud.
