Helicopter makes emergency landing after engine failure

An operation to capture two rhinos outside the Kruger National Park (KNP) on August 18 almost ended tragically when a helicopter experienced engine failure.

According to KNP officials, the helicopter, with three officials on board, was dispatched to look for a rhino and her calf, which were observed outside of the park, west of Orpen Gate.

While the team was searching for the animals, to guide the game-capturing team on the ground, the helicopter experienced a loss of power and engine failure. The pilot managed to carry out a successful emergency landing that resulted in no injuries or damage to the aircraft.

“We are grateful that our employees are all safe and no one was hurt; even grateful that the team on the ground managed to recover the animals and ensure their safe return to the park. Special commendation goes out to the pilot, who under critical circumstances, managed to land the aircraft safely,” concluded the KNP’s managing executive, Mr Glenn Phillips.

An inspection of the helicopter was carried out to determine the cause of the incident.
