MBOMBELA – Hoërskool Bergvlam has come up with a novel way to encourage its learners to embrace their additional language. This dual-medium school will host its first-ever Afrikaans Expo for first additional-language learners next month.
The expo will be held under the banner, “Be Calm and Explore Afrikaans”.
Ms Louise Fullard, Afrikaans first additional-language subject head at the school, explained that the expo is aimed at giving learners the opportunity to do research, express their creativity and explore entrepreneurship.
Participation is compulsory for first additional-language learners from grades eight to 11, and the marks they earn will be included in their year marks.
They will work together in groups. Each will have the opportunity to present their projects to the adjudicators on October 14, Fullard explained.
Group creativity, approach, methodology and thoroughness, display, grasp of content and Afrikaans presentation, will be marked.
“Each project must be presented in a unique and interesting way,” she said.
Fullard expects 43 projects from 400 learners to be on display during the exhibition.
Different grades will be required to participate in different categories. Grade eights must create an Afrikaans reading book for grade-one level or create an Afrikaans board game.
The grade nine learners must compile a school newspaper, while the grade tens have to record a music DVD.
The grade 11 learners are tasked with recording an Afrikaans poetry DVD. The broader public will also be exposed to their efforts.
On October 15, parents, family and friends are welcome to visit the exhibition in the school hall from 09:00 to 15:00.
Groups from other schools who wish to visit are encouraged to contact Fullard on 079-017-0405 or louise@bergvlam.co.za.
