Vigilant staff saves the day

The arrested suspect had allegedly used cloned cards at the store before.

A man was arrested on Monday after allegedly using cloned credit cards.

According to staff at Field Auto Spares City in Anderson Street, it was a team effort that got the suspect nabbed.

It all started two weeks ago when the man purchased a set of four taxi tyres for just less than R6 000 on both the fifth and sixth days of the month.

The transactions went through, but last week the company was notified by Standard Bank’s Anti-fraud Unit that the two transactions had been done with cloned credit cards.

Field Auto said since  it kept copies of clients’ identification documents when they paid with credit cards, the company could go back and determine who the suspect was.

When he walked back into the store this week, again to purchase taxi tyres, the staff recognised him and stalled him, while others phoned the store’s security company.

Staff at Field Auto told Nelspruit Post it took a little time to buy tyres, and they could stall the suspect without raising alarm.

They noted that the suspect was also very smooth, calm and collected, and very confident.

“You would never suspect this guy of something like this,” one remarked.

Hi-Tech Security Nelspruit had an excellent response time and arrived at the scene quickly. Mr Jacques Meiring of Bossies Community Justice was also on the scene. SAPS later arrived and arrested the suspect.

According to Capt Dawie Pretorius, spokesman for the police a case of fraud had been opened.

The suspect, who cannot be named until he has appeared in court, was expected to appear in court yesterday.
