Criminals not deterred by home’s burglar-proofing

Burglars had gained access to the house through a bedroom window by breaking open the burglar bars.

People are starting to question the safety of burglar-proofed doors and windows after a break-in in a burglar-proofed house in Sarel Cilliers Street.

According to a Facebook post by Nelspruit Concerned Citizens, the organisation’s patrollers attended to the break-in on Saturday morning. Burglars had gained access to the house through a bedroom window by breaking open the burglar bars.

Hi-Tech was also called to the scene. A cellphone, laptop and flat screen TV were looted.

Although people feel burglars bars cannot guarantee the safety of residents, Mr Vernon Lancaster from Hi-Tech security said the company recommended that people should have them to maximise their safety.

He added that burglar bars should be installed on the inside of windows so that if the criminals break the glass first, the occupants will hear the noise.

“Most people prefer wooden windowsvbut they are not as safe as steel frames,”said Lancaster. He added it was safer to have alarms installed to beef up security in a yard. In another incident, a concerned Bloemfontein man reported on the

Nelspruit Concerned Citizens Facebook page that his neighbour went through a similar ordeal where burglars used a garden fork to break the bars.

Mr André Steyn said this was done within a few minutes. Apparently, this made such a noise that the owner of the property ran to the scene and scared the would-be burglars off.
