Police recover vehicle after house robbery

Due to swift action from Tonga police officers, a couple's vehicle was recovered shortly after robbers fled with it.

TONGA – Police are looking for six suspects who broke into a house in Nhlalakahle in the early hours of Tuesday and robbed an elderly couple. The 62-year-old man and his wife were asleep, when six African men stormed into their bedroom, of whom one wielded a firearm.

The couple were tied up with clothes, while the robbers ransacked the house.

Four cellphones and cash were stolen. The suspects also demanded the couple’s car keys and fled the scene in their Toyota double-cab.

The incident was reported to Tonga SAPS, who reacted swiftly and tracked down the vehicle in the mountains around Steenbok. The suspects were planning to cross into Mozambique but abandoned the vehicle when they spotted the police.

No one was arrested, but fingerprints were lifted from the vehicle and sent to the local criminal record centre in the hope of identifying the suspects.

Tonga station commander, Brig Velisiwe Mdaka, extended her gratitude to the members of Relief C for acting swiftly. She also encouraged the community to report crime immediately as it makes it easier for the police to perform their duties.
