BURGERSFORT – Parents from Thabane Primary School and Pae Pae Secondary School in Mabotsha Village brought mid-morning traffic to a standstill when they blockaded the old Penge Road during a protest on Tuesday.The residents are demanding that the two dilapidated schools be improved. “We have a situation whereby hundreds of our learners are packed in a single classroom. Its high time the government listens to our pleas and erects classrooms in our area,” said one of the protesters. “We demand temporary classes for our kids,” they added. The blockading of the road left pupils and workers stranded.Others lambasted the parents’ decision insisting, “Blocking the roads was not a good decision”.In February 2015, Steelburger/Lydenburg News published an article in which the Thabane School buildings were destroyed by heavy rain.The school management team then wrote to the Limpopo Department of Education to intervene. About a year later, some of the school’s buildings are still roofless. Education’s spokesman, Dr Naledzani Rasiri, said Thabane was one of the schools that were top of their priority list. “There are plans to build classrooms this year, we are pleading with the parents to be patient as we plan to rectify the crisis,” he said.
