TONGA – The local Police Station was informed that suspects who were arrested for petty crimes, like drinking in public, had paid their admission of guilt fines but had not received proof of payment.

Community members were urged to go pay any fines at the police station, instead of to police officers on the street, even if ordered. A receipt should also be issued for any fines paid.
If any police officer demands that you pay fines to him in the street and you are not issued a legal proof of payment, the incident must be reported to the police station.

Tonga station commander Brig Velisiwe Mdaka also warned community members to never give out their bank account or other personal details to anyone telephonically.
