Carboot sales helps raise funds for local cancer patients

Moving Mountains for Cancer Patients hosted their first car boot sale at the Ingwe Centre in Malalane last Saturday, with several locals filling their boots with second-hand treasures to sell.

MALALANE – Community members enjoyed digging through car boots and tables heaped with an eclectic mix of second-hand goods during Moving Mountains for Cancer Patients’ first car boot sale at the Ingwe Centre parking lot on Saturday morning.

The rummage sale was the first Onderberg fund-raiser for the Mbombela-based organisation, which aims to assist local cancer patients in practical ways.

Community members of all ages hoped to make cash out of former treasures or raise funds for organisations such as the Malelane Guardian Angels and Love 4 Claws. Items ranged from vacuum cleaners and books to clothing and toys, and several people walked away with broad smiles after buying a treasure for next to nothing.

Dedré van Graan, the Onderberg’s Moving Mountains representative, was very happy with the support and turnout, as the location near Shoprite drew many feet.

She hopes to regularly host these car boot sales, taking turns with Love 4 Claws, which originally started these types of markets last year.

Patricia van der Westhuizen of Love 4 Claws also had a stall at the market, and said the organisation is still active in sterilising feral cats in the area.

Love 4 Claws scaled down earlier this year as volunteers were no longer able to rescue and care for the large volumes of stray and feral cats that landed on their doorstep. They returned to their main aim of curbing the population and assisting people who cannot otherwise afford it to get their cats sterilised to avoid the increase of strays in Malalane.

Besides the car boot sales, Van Graan aims to hosts several other fund-raisers to support cancer patients from the Onderberg in getting to their treatments, accommodation near the hospital or affording extras like blood tests.

She will work closely with Moving Mountains founder, Izelle Pretorius. Community members can also support their work by leaving donations at the marked containers at Pick n Pay Malalane’s paypoints.
